An Exciting Itinerary!

This month sees the first Caronia Great World Cruise visiting probably the most exciting and diverse ports of the entire itinerary. With a farewell to the mysterious east with a call at Singapore, the trajectory heads toward the Indian and African Continents with most of month spent in tropical climes.

The extra day stay in Colombo to enjoy the sights and smells of a tropical paradise island, followed by visits to the Taj Mahal and Mt Everest in India, culminate in a transit of the Suez Canal before arriving in Egypt, with opportunities to visit the Pyramids.

A whole raft of excursions were arranged so that passengers didn't miss any of the range of the World's now most famous tourist sights, in the days when tourism had not taken anything like the economic grip that it has today. The special trains laid on for the 7 day excursions in India would in fact be provisioned by the “Green Goddess”.

Even though most of the excursions would be overland by car or train, a few would also include air travel where passengers would leave the ship in Colombo and rejoin the Caronia at Bombay, or leave the ship in Bombay and rejoin her in Aden, so that everybody enjoyed the Suez Canal transit.

The 1951 Virtual World Cruise

One of the very first special features added to the Timeline was the Virtual World Cruise of 1951, where the day-to-day information has been recorded on dedicated pages. They carry much greater detail about shore arrangements, potted histories and interesting period photographs.

Some of that information would normally be recorded on this page, but instead only Link images, like the one above, will take you to the relevant day page. This Virtual Cruise will enable you to make comparisons between then and now. Don't miss out!

The Caronia is seen here, at the end of being “in detention”, with her anchors weighed, and about take her turn to progress along the Suez Canal. Note the “search light” fitted to her bow. In darkness, the beam swinging from side to side from this lamp would show the proximity of the banks on either side.
