Colombo Arrival
THE CARONIA will enter Colombo Harbour at 5.30am on Tuesday and tie-up at buoys shortly thereafter. Passengers will go ashore by tenders, and a transfer service will be maintained between the Caronia and the jetty at regular intervals during the time the ship remains at Colombo.

Colombo
Cosmopolitan capital of the Dominion Island of Ceylon. Important commercial centre on the Indian Ocean, founded by the Portuguese over 400 years ago. It is a prosperous modern city peopled by Tamils, Indians, Malays, Burghers, Europeans and Eurasians, as well as by the native Singalese.
Nowhere else in so small a compass is the mysterious East so wonderful in its diversity of interest and scene: colourful bazaars, silent temples, great flowering trees and waving palms, as in this island of gems, spices and tropical beauty.

Cool Weather Clothing
Note: Although light-weight clothing is completely suitable for Colombo and Kandy, members of the Optional Tours O-43 and O-44 visiting Nuwara Eliya, which is at 6,420 feet above sea level and therefore apt to be cooler, would be well advised to carry an item or two of heavier clothing for use while in that town.

Schedule of Shore Arrangements
Excursion S-20 Full Day in Colombo
Group A
Morning
Cars will leave the jetty at 10.am on Tuesday for Group A and visit the important points of Colombo. After the business district called the “Fort”, continue to the neighbouring Pettah section the Oriental trading centre.
See the Hindu Temple, the Wolfendaal Church, reminiscent of the Dutch occupation of the 17th and 18th Centuries. The St Lucia Cathedral, the Buddhist Temple and modern buildings.
The cars then enter the Cinnamon Gardens, once a grove of the aromatic spices, now a residential area and then proceed to the Galle Face Hotel.

Luncheon (Tiffin) …
Will be served at the Galle Face Hotel, Colombo's leading hotel on the Ocean front, beginning at 1pm. Representative shops have booths and displays at this hotel.

Afternoon
At 2.30pm automobiles will be available for three alternative programmes. Tour members may either proceed directly to Mt. Lavinia for sea bathing, or take the regular excursion through suburban sections, the zoo and the Kesbewa District to Mt Lavinia where tea will be served, or else they may spend the afternoon in Colombo shopping. All automobiles are due back at the jetty at 5.30pm.

Optional Tour O-42 One Day Tour to Kandy
This drive follows the same route as Group A of Excursion S21 described below but travels both ways by automobile. It is a one day tour from Colombo to Kandy, with the same sightseeing, and luncheon at the Queen's Hotel.
Cars will leave the jetty at 9am and leave Kandy at 4pm reaching the landing place at about 7pm and returning by tender to the Caronia for dinner aboard ship.

Optional Tour O-43
2 Day Tour to Kandy and Nuwara Eliya
Tuesday and Wednesday 6th & 7th March
Cars will leave the jetty at 8am proceed via Kegatta and the Kadugannawa Pass to the famous Botanical Gardens at Peradeniya, then continuing to the Queen's Hotel at Kandy for luncheon.
Afterward, a drive will be made around the lake to the Temple of the Tooth and to Katugastota, where elephants may be seen bathing.

The drive then continues through the Ramboda Pass to Nuwara Eliya where accommodations have been reserved at the Grand Hotel.
On Wednesday morning there will be a drive around Nuwara Eliya, taking in the main points of interest of this highland hill station.
After luncheon at the Grand Hotel, automobiles will return via Hatton, the Ginigathena Pass and Kitulgala to Colombo, reaching the jetty at about 6pm.
Optional Tour O-44
2 Day Tour to Nuwara Eliya and Kandy
Tuesday and Wednesday 6th & 7th March
Leaving the jetty at 8.15am cars will travel over the same itinerary as the tour above but in reverse order, with luncheon at the Grand Hotel in Nuwara Eliya on Tuesday, continuing to Kandy in the afternoon where accommodations have been reserved at the Queen's Hotel for the night.
The tour returns to Colombo in the afternoon of Wednesday 7th March, reaching the jetty at about 5pm.
