Glossary / Digest Introduction

The Caronia Timeline Glossary / Digest covers several topics where some translation or definition of terms is required. Clicking on the “Digest” link at the bottom of each page will bring you back to this index.

In addition this is where links to sets of comparative information are brought together. These include…

The Culinary Translator

Apart from the usual nautical terms, I'm also assembling a culinary translator here. The object of the exercise being to try and define some of the mystical names attached to the fabulous dishes prepared in the galley aboard the “Green Goddess”.

Eventually, if anyone asks you what Gombo de Volaille, Créole is, you will be able to tell them. If I can find some brave soul to help me, I might even put some recipes up here too.

An Important Caveat

The information provided within the Nautical References section below originally formed part of Appendices printed in cruise souvenir books for guidance of passengers aboard the Caronia. The source text for these pages came from the Great African Cruise book of 1950.

Since that time, particularly with the advent of International Standard of Units (SI), please be aware that many values may have since been amended or the meaning of terms adjusted to suit modern day needs.

If you can contribute any information, do please get in touch…
