Arrival Time in Suez, Egypt

The CARONIA is due to arrive at Suez at about 8pm on Sunday 25 March and will anchor near the entrance to the Suez Canal. Port formalities will follow shortly thereafter.

Baggage

The coloured baggage tags which have been distributed by the Cruise Office are to be attached to each piece of luggage before being given to the Room Stewards - by 9pm on 25 March. Baggage so labelled will be sent on the special train and delivered to the hotels in Cairo. (This obtains both for passengers on the special train and for those who will travel by auto across the desert to Cairo)

Clothing

For ordinary wear in Egypt light or medium weight clothing will be found most comfortable, but a wrap or coat is often necessary in the evenings, as there is usually a marked drop in temperature after sundown. Evening clothes are redundant.

Schedule of Shore Arrangements

Boat Train to Cairo

Passengers will land at Suez by ship's launches between 7.15am and 7.45am on Monday 26 March. The special train will leave the landing place at 8.30am and arrive in Cairo at 11.30am. Light refreshments will be available in the buffet car of this train.

Arrival Time in Alexandria

The CARONIA is due to arrive at Alexandria at 7.30am on Wednesday 28 March

Departure Time from Alexandria

3pm on Saturday, 31 March

The CARONIA will sail from Alexandria promptly at 3pm on Saturday 31 March for Haifa. Please notify your Bedroom Steward of your final return on board.

Sightseeing in Cairo

Four half-day sightseeing trips have been arranged for members of Tour S-26 and O-51 in accordance with the multigraphed programmes distributed before arrival at Suez.

Notes on the Sights of Cairo

The Citadel

Built as a fortress by Saladin in 1179.Magnificent views over Cairo from the parapets. The Citadel contains the following Mosques

Mohammed Ali (or Alabaster) Mosque who's graceful minarets and dome form a landmark of Cairo. Completed in AD 1879

Mosque of Sultan Hussan - AD1350 - the finest existing monument of Arabian architecture in Egypt. Note the cornice about the façade, the broad treatment of the walls and the south minarets

Mosque El Ashar - AD 970 - converted in 988 into a university, the most important of Islam

The Pyramids of Giza - 3700 BC

Ranking among the oldest monuments of human industry. The three pyramids are those of Cheops (450 feet high) Chephren (477 feet high) and Mycerinus (204 feet high).

The second pyramid still retains a portion of the original outer covering. A walk along the northern side of the base of the Pyramid of Cheops will reveal the careful workmanship and the wonderful proportions of the pyramids.

The Sphinx

Stands as the oldest known monument fashioned by human hands. Its origin is wrapped in mystery, but it was certainly in existence, and presumably repaired by Cheops.
