The Rotary Club Meeting

There were Rotary Club meetings regularly held on most cruises on the Caronia. The story below comes from a jotting made by E.J. Rowel for cruise lecturer William W. Harris, no doubt for him to recount on later cruises…

The Saga of the False Teeth

Rotary Club Emblem A man fell over on his way to make a speech at a Rotary Club luncheon. His false teeth came out and broke on the footway. During the luncheon he told his troubles to the Chairman, explaining that without his teeth he could not speak or make himself understood.

In response, the Chairman reached into his pocket and pulled out a set of false teeth. Tried - no good. Several other sets were tried, until finally one set fitted just right. The speaker told his audience the story, saying that “if the Chairman had not been a dentist, then he could not have spoken!”

However, he couldn't understand why they roared with laughter at this. So afterward he asked someone, what was the joke? It was explained that the Chairman was not a dentist, but an undertaker!

Rotarians & R.A.O.B.

One thing that I have not yet been able to establish is whether any crew members were Rotarians and were therefore allowed to attend the meetings (announced to the passengers) on board. There was an active Royal Antediluvian Order of Buffaloes Lodge (R.A.O.B.) formed amongst the crew. (See R.A.O.B. Research), so were passengers invited to their meetings?
