Cars will leave the jetty at 10.am Wednesday for Group B and visit the important points of Colombo.
After the business district called the “Fort”, continue to the neighbouring Pettah section the Oriental
trading centre. See the Hindu Temple, the Wolfendaal Church, reminiscent of the Dutch occupation of the 17th and 18th
Centuries, the St Lucia Cathedral, the Buddhist Temple and modern buildings.

The cars then enter the Cinnamon Gardens, once a grove of the aromatic spices, now a residential area and then proceed
to the Galle Face Hotel.
Will be served at the Galle Face Hotel, Colombo's leading hotel on the Ocean front, beginning at 1pm. Representative
shops have booths and displays at this hotel.

Afternoon
At 2.30pm automobiles will be available for three alternative programmes. Tour members may either proceed directly to
Mt. Lavinia for sea bathing, or take the regular excursion through suburban sections, the zoo and the Kesbewa District
to Mt. Lavinia where tea will be served, or else they may spend the afternoon in Colombo shopping. All automobiles are
due back at the jetty by 5.30pm.
Note: For convenience and variety, this tour will be operated in two sections. Group A will travel from Colombo
by car and return by special train. Group B will do just the reverse: travelling by train to Kandy and returning by car.
Group A leaves the Upper jetty at 8.30am, Group B leaves the Lower Jetty at 8.15am.
The railways of Ceylon have good equipment and only their best carriages will be used for this tour. The tracks are
broad-gauge and the rolling stock is very spacious. The mountainous sections are most picturesque on the run and there
will be many enticing opportunities for photographers.

Morning
The beauties of Ceylon are enjoyed to the full on the uphill climb to Kandy. First comes the rich coastal plain, with
rice paddies, coconut groves and plantain trees.
At Kadugannawa both the road and the railway begin their steep climb into the hills. At the top of the pass is the tall
column set up in 1832 in honour of the engineer of the first road.
From here the road runs direct to Peradeniya, site of the wonderful tropical gardens filled with spice trees and
exuberant plants of this paradise island. From there, the automobiles will follow the river drive to Katugastota, where
the elephants take their midday baths.
Entering Kandy, a visit may be paid to the Temple of the Tooth, Buddhism's most sacred shrine. A Kandyan Dance has been
arranged as well as a visit to the showrooms of the Kandyan Art Association.
Luncheon
Tour members arriving by train at 11.30am will be transferred directly by motor coach to the
Queen's Hotel for luncheon beginning at 12.30pm. Those arriving by car will reach the Hotel
for luncheon at 1.30pm.
Those passengers who arrived in Kandy by train will leave the Hotel at 1.30pm for the programme of sightseeing as
outlined above. Those who arrived by automobile will leave the Hotel at 3pm by motor coach for the Kandy train station
and depart by train at 3.25pm.
Both groups will reach the jetty in Colombo between 6.30pm and 6.45pm and return to the Caronia for dinner aboard ship.

The Daily programme features an extremely rare typographical error, with the date for the first Saturday given as the
9th March instead of the 10th. Bear in mind that every character of a typeface was made of lead. A line of type was
assembled by hand and once composed, locked into its frame before inking.
Proof-reading was also done by the compositor, on shiny metal characters placed upside-down and back-to-front in the
frame. It required tremendous skill. Back then, the idea of a “word-processor”, let alone a
“spell-checker”, was still 40 years hence!
