Junior Rates of Pay
When I first started work on the “Green Goddess” as a Commis Waiter in July 1964, my wages were just £20 a month! Mind you, this was an increase of £4 a month upon my previous pay rate as a “Callender Boy” on Union Castle.
Below is a transcript of a December 1965 internal memo from the Catering Staff Office to Mr. John Bainbridge, a former Supervisory Chef on board, now Assistant Catering Superintendent. It explains the rates of pay for the junior ratings in the Catering Department.
Student Cooks:
Rate of pay up to 18 years of age £40/12/6d p.m., rising to £57/17/6d
p.m. at 20, to a minimum of £62/2/6d at age 21. Normally, possession of City & Guilds 151 is insisted
on, but in special cases references from top class Hotels are accepted in lieu. Usually selected from
pupils of Technical Colleges.
Boy Cooks:
Same rate of pay as Commis Waiters. Usually selected from Commis Waiters who have
requested change, and after 6 to 12 months are promoted to Student Cooks on Chef's advice.
Assistant Cooks:
Minimum age 18. Starting rate of pay £52/12/6d p.m. rising to £58/2/6d
p.m. after 5 years service on Articles.
Commis Waiters:
Entry age 15¾ years to 17¼ years. Starting pay £23 p.m. (approx. $70)
rising yearly to £33/2/6d p.m. after 2 years service.
Bell boys are no longer engaged as such. All
boys are Commis Waiters now, but for those about to do their first voyage at sea act as bell boys for a
provisional period.
At the time there were approximately $US3 to the GB£1.
Unlike the Union Castle Line, operating the Callender in the laundry on board Cunard ships was not performed by junior ratings, so no Callender Boys are shown above. Certainly, on board the Caronia women were employed for this rôle instead.
What this shows is that, despite very low rates of pay, some shipping lines were still exploiting junior staff, and although female employees were used instead on Cunard, they would still not be paid as much as their male counterparts. In those days equal pay legislation was still 5 years away and I have no idea if it was implemented for seagoing women when enacted!
