Rioting in Egypt Overshadows Africa-India Cruise
Late in January 1952 there was anti-British rioting in Cairo. Lasting several days, and with at least 20 people killed, this cast an unwelcome shadow just days after Caronia had set sail on her 2nd African Cruise. The consequence of this would be that the planned call to Alexandria in Egypt would be forsaken in favour of added calls to Haifa, Rhodes and Istanbul.
In those days, you could not buy segments of a major cruise. It was all or nothing! With air travel considered as risky back then, the support that the jet airliner brings today wasn't there to even consider this as an option.
The 2nd Great African Adventure
For this section of the Timeline I have access to a published first-hand reference from a passenger on board, Mr T.R. Schoonover, a farmer from Lima, Ohio. He was President of the “City Loan and Savings Company” and also Board Chairman of the “Metropolitan Bank.” During the cruise he sent regular bulletins back to his local newspaper - “The Lima News.”
These were later collated and privately published as a 56 page booklet that has been entirely transcribed here on the Timeline. The T.R. Schoonover Travelogue is yet another fascinating “social history” document which gives an insight about various parts of the World, still unsettled even 7 years after the end of WWII.
