The 1966 Match programme Transcript

According to the ship's daily programme for 22 July 1966 this annual football match had taken on a very grand title. Originally known as the Wareham & Bergen Trophies match, it has had its title extended to: “The Wareham Trophy, The Len Golding Cup and The Bergen Cup”. Quite a mouthful!

Some more research is required, particularly about Len Golding. On board Caronia, for a short time in 1954, there was a Head Waiter by the name of Leonard Golding. Was this the same guy and did he return to the ship later in his career?

I'm hoping to record just how his name became associated with this game. This particularly as there is no mention within the match programme itself.

What can be gleaned is that by 1966 the two teams were evenly matched by their results. From 1955 to date there had been 8 wins each and just one draw. So, this was probably just a bit more of a needle match than hitherto. The eagle-eyed may have noticed that the programmes had a cover price of 15 cents.
