First Southampton Overhaul
From 17 October to 30 December Caronia underwent her first major overhaul to be carried out at Southampton. Usually these refits were carried out at Liverpool. During this refit a major turbine gear wheel, weighing in at no less than 50 tons, was replaced. It would have been during this time that I had first set eyes on the Caronia, on a trip by train to Southampton via Romsey. I was just ten years of age!
The initial impact of my seeing the Caronia, which at the time was the “only ship in the World” to carry the cruising green livery was extraordinary, though little did I realise that 7 years later, I'd be climbing the gangway to join her as a Commis Waiter. Neither did I realise the lasting impact that life aboard her for nearly two years would have, with the quality of food, its preparation and service, among many other things, being held as a bench-mark ever since.
