RMS Caronia's Lifeboats

Finding unusual detail pictures of the Caronia is always exciting these days. As I have quite extensively covered the interior of the “Green Goddess” on the Timeline, it makes a refreshing change to be able to show a detail shot of Caronia's motor launch davits.

The six motor launches were another aspect of Caronia being built primarly for cruising. They were quite large motorboats, able to carry up to 60 people, and were hung on the biggest davits ever fitted to a ship up to that time. In cruise ports where Caronia could not go alongside, they provided safe and speedy transit from ship to shore.

The boats could be adjusted to suit the prevailing weather. The “cabin” could be left covered if it was windy, or raining. In ideal weather the roof could be removed and replaced with an open tarpaulin cover to protect passengers from the sun. Caronia was fitted with six of these launches, although it was only if there was a heavy demand expected that all were used at once.
