Some Nostalgia

My own recollections of Naples are mixed between the amazing sights available from almost anywhere and the pesky touts that were shadowing your every move. None were present in either Venice or Livorno, but in Naples they were everywhere and not beneficial to your wealth. You immediately get an impression of the poverty the Neapolitans endure.

Touts aside, I was able to meet my Uncle in Naples; he'd been living there since WWII. Having someone with you able to tell the Italian pests where to go, in their own language, was a huge bonus. Their faces were a picture as of course we'd be chatting together in English.

If Naples hadn't been an access point for passenger visits to Rome, there would probably not have been any overnight stay. The exit from the harbour was through a fortified gate, minus its moat and keep. Italian traffic also had to be seen to be believed!

With almost perpetually fine weather anyway, though the heat of high summer having waned, it was the best time to enjoy the wonderful scenic and historic beauty that surrounds you. It was a case of being spoilt for choice.
