Just outside the Strait of Gibraltar lies the city of Tangier where Africa meets Europe. It's a city of explosive
colour and sharp contrasts. Life is filled with excitement, swarming crowds, cars defying gravity as they race down the
steep, narrow hills. Riotous buying and selling in Petit Socco, alive with vivid sidewalk markets, narrow winding
streets, whitewashed homes, wailing mendicants and women veiled to the eyes.
As in all North Africa there is much to see beyond “local colour”
- the Grottoes of Hercules
- the tomb of Sidi-Kacem
- the famed Casbah
- Malabata Point which commands a magnificent view of the Strait
- the Sultan's Palace
- the Charf and Villa Harris
Most intriguing of all will be the tumbled, cluttered niches that serve as shops for native wares.
Arrival at Tangier
The Caronia is due to anchor off Tangier at 7am. Transportation ashore will be by ship's tenders. Unlike the Boat Drill you won't need to clamber aboard high up on Promenade Deck.
This time you descend to “B” Deck forward, where you'll find a pontoon lowered down the ship's side. Help will be at hand to assist you with embarking and you'll find the motor launch will be surprisingly comfortable for its size.
