At 9am automobiles will leave the ship at Long Beach, home port of the Pacific Fleet of the United States Navy. The
drive passes numerous oil fields, tank farms and refineries before joining the Pacific Coast Highway.
The harbour of Wilmington, Palos Verdes Hills and Estates, Redondo and Hennosa Beaches, Culver City, and several movie
studios will be seen en route to Hollywood and Beverly Hills.
Pass many homes of radio, television and movie celebrities on the way through these famous cities
in to Los Angeles, where luncheon will be served at the Hotel Biltmore. A transfer service from
Los Angeles to the CARONIA at Long Beach will be maintained during the afternoon.
Excursion S-4 Motor Drive to Los Angeles,
Beverly Hills and Hollywood
Automobiles will leave the dock at 9am and motor north up the Pacific Coast Boulevard to Signal
Hill, now a forest of oil derricks. The first well was brought into use in 1921, and along the route will
be seen the refineries of many famous petroleum companies.
Turn west on Pacific Coast Highway, driving through Wilmington and past Los Angeles harbour, which was excavated out of
mud flats over a period of 30 years. To the left notice Palos Verdes Hills and Estates, and pass through rich truck farms.
Los Angeles
After seeing some of the new housing developments, turn north to Redondo and Hermosa Beach, then continue through hilly
districts to Los Angeles International Airport, where traffic is halted whenever a transoceanic plane approaches.
Continuing on Sepulveda Boulevard, pass the Westchester Development, the Hughes Aircraft Company, Loyola University,
and Culver City, site of the MGM Studios. Following Washington Boulevard, pass the RKO-Pathe Studio (where “Gone
With The Wind” was filmed), and the Hal Roach Studio.
At Crenshaw Boulevard turn north to Wilshire, and then drive through the “Miracle Mile” to Beverly Hills,
famed for its movie stars’ homes and cafés. Follow through Hollywood Boulevard and motor into the centre of Los
Angeles, arriving at the Biltmore Hotel at about 1pm.
Luncheon
Will be served at the Biltmore, beginning at 1 o'clock. An adjacent foyer will be at the
disposal of all members of the excursion for lounging if they so desire.
Afternoon in Los Angeles
The afternoon is free until sailing time. Automobiles will be at the disposal of shore
excursion members for shopping or further drives at regular tariff rates. However, there is no
charge for the transfer in your same automobile from the Biltmore back to the CARONIA at Long
Beach.
Your car will be called to the Grand Avenue entrance of the Biltmore Hotel when you are
ready. All automobiles must leave the hotel no later than 4.00pm in order to reach the pier in time for sailing.
Important Note
Long Beach, where the CARONIA will be docked, is 22 miles from Los Angeles and even further
from Hollywood and the Wilshire District. All passengers should allow at least an hour for the
transfer from Los Angeles Centre back to the ship in order not to be late for sailing time.
Departure
The CARONIA will sail from Long Beach promptly at 6pm on Thursday afternoon, 18 January, for
Honolulu. Be sure to notify your Bedroom Steward of your return on board ship.
