Bergen in 1963

Thanks to John Higgins, I'm able to cover the 1963 and 1964 soccer matches in greater detail. However, as with many pictures in the crew section, not many names are known, so if you recognise anyone depicted here, do please get in touch

A positive identification in photo JHIG08 comes from Roger Birch, who says “The person second from left in the dark top is Jim Blackie, from Gateshead. He was a friend of mine who worked in the engine room.”

The 1963 Burial Procession

The final ritual of the day would be for a “burial procession” to be held by the victors of that day's match. The mock coffin for the losing team was ceremoniously paraded through the ship just after leaving Bergen in the early hours.

The procession would make its way from the crew bar (the “Pig & Whistle”) to the aft crew deck, where the coffin would meet its end, overboard! The photograph below shows the 1963 procession in the main stairwell aft, descending to the losing Sandringham Restaurant.
