The 1963 Burial Procession
The final ritual of the day would be for a “burial procession” to be held by the victors of
that day's match. The mock coffin for the losing team was ceremoniously paraded through the ship
just after leaving Bergen in the early hours.
The procession would make its way from the crew bar (the “Pig & Whistle”) to
the aft crew deck, where the coffin would meet its end, overboard! The photograph below shows
the 1963 procession in the main stairwell aft, descending to the losing Sandringham Restaurant.
