The Delights of New York

This month would see me making my third visit to New York, and with the prospect of nearly three days in port, there was plenty of excitement. By now I had got to know of the places to head for when we arrived.

The nearby Market Diner was always a favourite haunt for many crew members. It made a welcome change from eating often snatched meals on board ship. Nearby there was a little gold-mine for any record collector. I certainly managed to update my collection of Roy Orbison Long Players there, including finding albums that were only ever released Stateside.

Probably the greatest excitement though, was in being able to go shopping at 1am, and seeing Times Square lit up in all its night-time glory. Perhaps not a big-deal if you are a New-Yorker, and with 24hr shopping becoming a regular thing of today, it probably makes you think - so what?

However, in the mid-1960s, being able to go to the movies at Midnight to see the Beatles film - Hard Day's Night - coming out at 2am to buy an automatic umbrella (a fashion statement of the day!) on the walk back to the ship, was something to write home about! After all, here was I, a teenager let loose in Manhattan's streets at dead of night(?)!

The Beatles Film had been released in August of 1964. True to form, it was shown aboard Caronia on 06 October 1964 during the Autumn Mediterranean Cruise. This being the first available cruise after its release!

A Bunch of Anomalies

Having secured a copy of the Voyage Log Abstract for the 1964 Summer Mediterranean Cruise, I'm finding that there are several pieces of information there that directly conflict with other printed items. For example, the stay at Valletta, Malta has been drastically foreshortened, showing a departure at 10.06am, just 2½ hours after arrival.

According to the log, we arrived at Syracuse just 4½ hours later for an overnight stay there until sailing at Noon for Messina. As stated, this directly conflicts with the information printed in the daily programmes, especially the departure of a shore tour at Malta. Byron Bang, from: Moncks Corner, SC USA has responded to my information request.

Byron writes…
I was on the cruise that visited Malta in September of 1964, or rather we anchored briefly and left without actually visiting. We were advised by ship's officers that, with Maltese independence less than two weeks away, the presence of a Royal Mail Ship was potentially provocative, and so, any passengers going ashore might become the focus of unwanted attention.

If memory serves, all references aboard at that time were to Malta G.C. as opposed to just “Malta”.

As with any passenger ship, safety was always the number one priority, both aboard and ashore. Caronia, especially, was always seen as having an ambassadorial capacity so any risk of causing a “diplomatic incident” would not have been entertained!

The arrival and time spent before the decision to depart was taken shows the lengths that the Captain had gone to in the hope of a successful resolution. On this occasion, it was not to be. Byron is also correct in reminding us about the “Malta G.C.” convention. Malta became Independent on 21 September 1964.

If you can contribute any information, do please get in touch…

The departure time from Valetta and arrival time at Syracuse tomorrow differ between those in the daily programme and the official voyage log. Now that the early departure from Valetta reason is confirmed, all times shown below are from the Voyage Log. The daily programme for 08 September was printed the day prior to arrival and not able to reflect the late itinerary change.

With Malta about to get its Independence from Britain, despite best efforts, it was considered too risky that the planned shore-tour should go ahead. The Captain's decision being to sail to Syracuse early giving passengers an overnight there instead of being at sea.
