World Cruise Advertising in France

Up until today I had always believed that all of Caronia's cruises departing from New York could only be paid for in US Dollars. It seems that this was a misconception because a period advert from an unidentified French magazine offers a “Grande Croisière Autour du Monde par Caronia” as departing from Le Havre on 07 January 1964.

With prices starting from 19,180 French Francs, the Great World Cruise is described as being Caronia's transatlantic Sterling Cruise to the “Antilles”, then New York. While most countries are then listed, rather strangely considering that it involved a week's stay, no mention is made of India. Despite two ports featuring in the itinerary, no mention is made of Japan either.

The return to France would arrive at Cherbourg aboard the RMS Queen Elizabeth on 11 May 1964. For anyone travelling, this would have been quite an adventure with two 4-day stays in New York. A transfer away from and back to the Caronia in January and transfer from Caronia to the QE, both presumably via hotels in the city.

From the Passenger List it looks like just two people took up this offer! It would be interesting to know where they stayed in New York.
