The “Trojans” Rowing Team

Among the myriad of sports and recreational activities held among and between the crew of the “Green Goddess” was the sport of rowing. I'm indebted to Jim Caslake for sending me the photograph below of the rowing team called the “Trojans.”

So, what did these valiant guys row? Nothing short of the Caronia's own lifeboats! Len Danson informs me that the boats used for these races were what was known as the two “sea boats”, those hoisted most forward on either side of Caronia's bridge. Jim describes them as being “heavy old things.”

The Trojans were made up of, as Jim describes “Odds and Sods” and they competed against teams from the Deck Department, Engine Room, the two Restaurants and the Galley.

The rowing races were mostly held in the more sheltered ports of the Mediterranean. Apparently, it was the Deck Department who won the most often, although apparently the Galley had a strong crew, and would gall the deckies by winning on a few occasions.

The Trojan team photo also appears within the Crew Quarters section with some of the team members identified.
