Diary of a Favourite Voyage
During the period of my researches on the Caronia, whenever the Japan and South Pacific Islands Cruise has been mentioned, the comment that invariably comes back from those who were there is - “that was one of the best cruises that Caronia ever did!”
Therefore, it is with some delight that I came across an article by John S. Wright, that was published in the Marine News - Journal of the World Ship Society (WSS) Volume 24 No.4 in April 1970. Entitled “Diary of a Voyage to Japan and South Pacific”. The article carries lots of snippets of information that bring this cruise to life.
Adrian Sweeney, Chairman of the WSS Merseyside Branch (2017-21) provided the following information about John Wright…
Adrian wrote:
One of our senior members remembers John Wright and says
that he was a
writer
with
the Cunard Line and served on a number of their vessels. In June 1966 a Mr Coney was our (WSS)
Chairman and John was one of the committee members, but he never held the Chair.
John arranged a nautical dinner in Southport for about 45 members on the 18th April 1967. Mr and Mrs Wright left Southport and went to live in Brixham in September 1967 but in September 1969 came back to live in Southport. John died many years later and his wife is also deceased.
John Wright was indeed the Chief Engineers’ Writer on this cruise. This, and the following three Timeline pages are dedicated to his memory.

Almost 500 passengers embarked on one of Britain's famous cruise liners during the late hours of
the 22nd January, 1954, at New York, to escape winter and travel to the sun on a 99 day cruise to Japan
and the South Pacific islands, which would take in 25 ports in 18 different lands. The majority of the
passengers were well-to-do Americans who had cruised on this same ship before and would do so again it
was firmly believed.
