“The Horizon”
A Crew Magazine of 1964
One piece of extraordinary crew ephemera to come into my possession is a copy of issue Number 3 of “The Horizon”. Although the document is not dated, it looks like it was produced during the 1964 Autumn Mediterranean Cruise. It runs to 10 sheets of typed foolscap pages, reproduced on a Roneo duplicator.
All these years later it would be very easy to cast a critical eye over this Magazine and set it aside as being almost worthless. However, as a social history document, I believe it's almost priceless. Its irreverence, strong and almost anarchic views, and distinct lack of political correctness would today probably qualify it as being the rantings of any extremist group you'd care to name!
Preface
It's not my intention to transcribe the entire document on the Timeline. If the site were being viewed exclusively by former crew members, I would probably take a different view. My reticence is based on this being a site for any reading age, and I fear that some of the robust views that were expressed could probably be taken completely out of context, cause offence to visitors and maybe even generate some unwanted hate mail.
A Caveat
The transcriptions of the selected pieces that follow are as close to exact copies as possible. Rather than “edit” the possibly offending phrases, the sentences containing them have been omitted altogether. Any errors or omissions in the spelling of people's names and / or titles, are those of the originators.
Also, do please keep in mind that all of the writing is of an era when everything was being robustly challenged. No doubt, a document bearing the Captain's name would need to have been approved by him, even if the contents were “very close to the knuckle”.
Feedback on “Caronia Social Club”
If there is anyone reading this who was involved in the “Caronia Social Club” I'd really like to hear from you. It's evident that it raised funds for a Children's Home, but at this point I have no further information. It is a subject that I'd like to cover in more detail.
