Such was the sensation around the building of Caronia in the UK that some companies jumped upon any chance to do some nifty advertising promotions. One such company was Goodlass, Wall & Co. Ltd, a name that would probably not be readily recognised.

However, mention of a brand known as “Valspar” and the penny drops. As a supplier of “industrial surface protection” coatings, in this case rust protection as opposed to paint, being involved with the building of the largest post-war ship was a very big deal!

At a time of all sorts of material shortages, production of a card folder with a large colour picture of Caronia inside was no trifling decision. However, for its own promotions it appears that Cunard probably had access to better quality paper and materials from the USA and was easily able to bring it to the UK.

The result is that this Brochure has not stood the test of time well. For example, the fancy gold-leaf edging on the cover has lost its lustre. Nevertheless, it was still a very bold and expensive exercise to produce it.

The magnificent Cunard Liner R.M.S. “Caronia”, largest ship to be built in any of the World's Shipyards since the war, was launched by H.R.H. Princess Elizabeth from John Brown's famous Clydebank yard on October 30th, 1947.

Already she has seen much service and as she cleaves the waves in her race from continent to continent the power and beauty of her slim and graceful lines bear eloquent testimony to the age-old supremacy of British skill and craftsmanship.

The superb quality of all the materials used in her construction and fitting out played their part in the creation of this triumph of marine engineering, and we are proud that the owners should have selected “Anodite” Rust Preventing Composition for the protection of the iron and steel on this latest addition to the Cunard fleet of “Tall Ships”.

The “Caronia” is only one of many fine ships, including the “Queen Mary”, “Queen Elizabeth” and “Mauretania”," sailing under the protection of “Anodite”. This scientifically prepared composition affords such a sure defence against rust and corrosion that when the “Queen Elizabeth” was being reconditioned after six years of gruelling war service, her steel work was found to be in a perfect state of preservation.

It is not surprising, therefore, that the owners took care that their latest pride should be equipped with the same shield and safeguard.

“Anodite” Ashore

“Anodite” Rust-Preventing Composition protects iron and steel from rust and corrosion, both afloat and ashore.

A scientifically prepared, non-poisonous, ready-for-use material which has been developed on the accepted electro-chemical theory in its relationship to the rusting of iron and steel. It possesses anodic properties and takes the attack set up between itself and the metal, which becomes cathodic in the presence of an electrolyte, e.g., moisture, etc.

When coated upon iron or steel, “Anodite” prevents the growth or formation of rust underneath its film.

A well-illustrated booklet, offering specialised information on the protection and maintenance of the iron and steel of shipping, bridges, mining gear, lock-gates, cranes, factories and other buildings, will be forwarded immediately upon request to the sole manufacturers:—
