Gothenburg, Sweden

In 1619 Gothenburg was founded as the first Swedish port on the North Sea, and its very heart is still its harbour. The first settlers migrated from Holland, and their influence is evident in the network of canals running through the town.

Although it is today one of the principal cities of Sweden, Gothenburg somehow retains an air of antiquity. In Gustaf-Adolf Torv, the main square, a statue of the city's illustrious founder faces a Town Hall that dates almost from his own day, and in the old town within the moat are a number of beautiful 18th century houses.
