Reykjavik, though a world outpost almost on the Arctic Circle, is not at all a city of ice and snow, but is bright with dooryard poppies and colourful window boxes flowering in the pleasant summer climate. You will stroll up the clean streets of the compact little community, looking at sea-gear and furs and silver in the shop windows, wondering at the shaggy ponies and houses built of corrugated iron.
You can visit the diminutive Cathedral, the sturdy Parliament House and National Museum with its Icelandic relics of distant centuries. Beyond Reykjavik, dun lava fields stretch away to blue snow-streaked mountains and to Thingvellir, that vast fissure-split crater where Europe's oldest parliament met in the open air from 930 to 1800.
