Alfred M. Staehle's Travelogue
1961 Virtual Great World Cruise

This travelogue presents transcripts of letters sent to family & friends by Alfred Staehle and his wife Lois, relating their experiences of places visited on Caronia's 1961 Great World Cruise. Collated by and shared with us by his grand-daughter, Sharon Atkins.

Valetta to Piraeus & Rhodes, Greece

There is no report for Greece within Al's notes. The probability for this being that he and Lois needed time to prepare for their flight to Luxor soon after Caronia docks at Alexandria, Egypt.

Mediterranean Weather

A.M.S…
We have touched on the weather now and again. It is winter in the Mediterranean and some of the ports we have called on, such as Palma, rate February as their worst month; likewise Madeira and Taormina consider their season to start at the end of February.

We have had the great good fortune to have experienced nothing but brilliant sunshine and mild temperatures; in the high fifties or low sixties. We are told that this is the mildest, sunniest, and most beautiful winter season the Mediterranean has experienced since 1899. We still have Athens and the Greek Islands to go as this is written, but even if the weather should fail us there, our luck has been beyond anything we had a right to hope for.

The brochure extols…
Athens
The pride of Greece, the evidence of a period that has never been duplicated — this is Athens. Small wonder the inhabitants revere the many treasures still preserved from the golden age of Pericles. Small wonder, too, that they will beam with pleasure at your every expression of admiration for an art so pure in line.

Shortly after you enter Athens, the Acropolis, standing in eloquent majesty above the city, will draw you entranced to its world-famed Parthenon, and to the Erechtheum with its Porch of Maidens. Everywhere the spirit of Socrates, Aeschylus, and Diogenes will seem to come to life as you view the beauties of their culture.

Before descending Mars Hill to the place where St. Paul preached to the Stoics, you will want to scan the broad panorama of fertile fields, and the modern city of Athens spread before your feet. Although much of Greece is in foreign museums, there is still a fantastic wealth of ancient culture here to be seen…

  • the Theseum, an almost perfect miniature of the Parthenon
  • the Odeon, the ancient open air theatre where the plays of Sophocles and Euripides were presented
  • Hadrian's Temple of Zeus
  • the Classics Museum
  • and the excavated ruins of the Agora to mention but a few
