List of Passengers

This page is a full-text transcript of the First Class Passenger List for Caronia's Westbound transatlantic crossing from Southampton and Le Havre on 14 September 1955. It is constructed from an amalgamation of Cunard's published list issued to passengers and New York US Immigration records.

Important Notes
  • Combining two lists has provided an opportunity of more complete information
  • As with crew lists, not all the information, such as age or place of birth, has been transcribed
  • In the Cunard list, wives travelling with their husbands don't have their actual forename(s) included, so these have been added
  • Amalgamation also means that this list gives place of embarkation and U.S. destination
  • Immigration manifests provide reliable information about who actually travelled
  • Names prefixed with ¶ are appended from the Immigration List, but do not appear in the Cunard List
  • Names placed within brackets show differences appended from the Immigration List
  • The errata list shows other differences between the two lists and those who did not embark

Felicity Hyde recalls…
I was aboard RMS Caronia from Southampton. We experienced Hurricane Ione during the voyage, and encountered gigantic waves and 120 knot winds. The fresh water tanks were filled with salt water in order to lower the ship in the water. We changed course, going into the eye of Ione, as I recall, and arrived late in New York.

Hurricane Ione had formed off Cape Verde, strengthened north of the Lesser Antilles, landed in Wilmington North Carolina, and restrengthened over the NW Atlantic as a category 2. As a child and first class passenger with a porthole cabin, I remember the grandeur and ferociousness of the sea, as if it were yesterday!

The staff and crew were marvellous, and when us children had the bathtub overflow, as the faucets all became stuck on, they were thankful it had happened and been repaired before the next Autumn Mediterranean Cruise passengers embarked. I shall always love the “Green Goddess” and the lifetime love of the sea she gave me.
