Travelogue of 1959 Great World Cruise
Henry J. Neils was a businessman from Minneapolis. He wrote a daily diary of his voyage on the 1959 Great World cruise. Presumably, the 30 faded typewritten sheets had been duplicated for distribution to his employees.
The transcribed document now forms 25 pages of the Timeline, accessible from links on the January, February, March and April 1959 month pages. This was the first special feature to be added to the Timeline as it entered its 2nd year of being on-line.

The Old City has many examples of architecture dating back to the twelfth century. The Red Fort is the most massive of
all of these structures. The wall around Old Delhi is giving way to new streets and other improvements.
Raj Ghat, where Mahatma Gandbi was cremated, is a park overlooking Old Delhi. The stone plaza and cenotaph are very simple as he had prescribed. A memorial is now being planned for this location. He is revered as the liberator of his country through passive resistance, fasting and prayer.
The plan for New Delhi was developed by two Englishmen, Sir Edward Lutyens and Sir Herbert Baker. They did a good job. The President's house, the circular Parliament Building and the Secretariat buildings are all very imposing, and situated on an elevated piece of ground overlooking the mall, which must be a mile long, ending at the Gate of India and statue of Queen Victoria.

There are many modern buildings, completed and under construction. Our United States Embassy Building is supposed to be
the finest. It is very attractive. I went in to see where some of our taxes are being spent.
It appears that New Delhi is getting most of the foreign aid and is striving to be the most modern capital in the World. Probably Brazil will claim that honour when their new inland capital is completed.
