New York in December

Here I am in New York again, and is it cold? I don’t think I have ever felt so cold. The wind is absolutely biting;
takes your breath away. The temperature today was 30°, quite a change from the West Indies where it was 90°.
I can tell you dear we won’t be sorry to sail tomorrow.
I was very pleased to get your letter and to know that everything is alright. I feel cut off entirely on this job, so I
will look forward to your letters dear to keep my mind at rest. I also had a letter from Mum, so I didn’t do too bad.
We arrived in New York earlier than expected, 2 o’clock Saturday afternoon. By the time we had our papers checked etc.,
it was getting on so we stopped on board for our evening meal (5 o’clock in port). Then we went for a walk round the
shops, which are marvellously decorated for Christmas. They go in for it in a big way here.

About 9 o’clock I went to the stage door of the theatre where Aunt Nal is working. I saw her alright and while I was
sitting talking to her, who should come past but the leading lady (of “The Pajama Game”)
Janis Paige. Aunt Nal said “Look Janis, here is my nephew from England” so of course I was introduced,
and to others of the cast.
Aunt Nal says the show is booked up for ages but she will try to get me some seats in January. Last night (or at least
from 4 o’clock) I went to Aunt Nals and had dinner, watched the TV and left about 8 o’clock as I had promised to meet
the boys at a Seaman’s Recreation place. (Missions to Seamen)
Very nice too, there is a film show, billiards, table tennis, TV, a library, and you also get free coffee and doughnuts.
So this is nice to know as everything is so expensive here: Cinemas - US$1.50 (10/6). If we have the cheapest meal:
egg and chips, as we had on Monday, it is 90 cents or nearly 7/-, so we have to watch every cent.
