Athens, Greece
Probably no city in the World today conjures up such a vivid pageant of glorious history as Athens. Here, in “the
cradle of civilisation”, one does not need an exceptional imagination to picture the great men of ancient time
who walked these ways and to hear the famous words which rang through the air.
The questioning philosophy of Socrates, the masterpieces of Aeschylus, Sophocles, Euripides and Aristophanes, the
stentorian commands of Pericles, and the moving oratory of St. Paul's speech beginning “Ye men of Athens”
- all these has Athens heard and preserved.
Yet the visitor who arrives at Athens expecting to find but an ancient city living on its departed glory will be
surprised at the modern city which he will find. When one remembers that 100 years ago the place was little more than
a poor village, whereas today it is one of the finest cities in the Mediterranean, it will be obvious that Athens has
not been content to rest upon the laurels which history has so freely and abundantly bestowed upon her.
Naturally the visitor will want firstly to see the world famous “Acropolis” and then take a selected choice
from the dozens of other monuments and historical wonders with which this city abounds.
Greece is not only a treasure of archaeological remains but a country of beauty and variety. Lazing under a hot
Mediterranean sun with a gay happy people proud of their past but very aware of their present, Greece who centuries ago
paved the way for this civilised age in which we live today awaits to remind and enchant us.
