Pursers in 1954

Brenton Jenkins writes…
I was a Senior Assistant Purser on the 1954 Japan & South Pacific cruise and my job was to prepare, with a staff of three, all the manifests and documents for the entry and clearance for each port, and most important of all, to see that passengers were never inconvenienced by having to present themselves at any time to the passport or customs authorities. We somehow managed it throughout the whole cruise.

Brenton continues…
We were just 4 working in the aft Cabin Class Purser's Office, which was closed on cruises. Our Bellboy is in front, a very nice young man but I cannot remember his name. He kept us supplied with coffee etc. We are just acting the fool in the photo.

Formal Dress

It wasn't just the passengers who were required to wear formal dress for evenings on board ship. Although this picture was taken aboard the RMS Queen Mary, it is included here because Albert Beebe was one of the first Chief Stewards on board Caronia. Here, he is seen with Brenton Jenkins on the left.

The photo was taken on the 1963 Spring Mediterranean Cruise. Chaps wearing glasses are Radio Officers, from 3rd to Chief (Fred Brown) on right. An engineer and Assistant Purser (A/P) are behind. Mid-row there are 3 A/Ps, Physiotherapist and Nurse and foreground is a Baggage Master, all unidentified. With everyone in dress uniform, this looks like a gathering ahead of a function elsewhere on board.
