Crew Roster on Deck December 1949
Prior to Christmas Cruise

In view of the high quality of the scan Brian has provided, I'm able to provide enlargements of sections where people's faces are recognisable. Several of the Officers are identifiable through their insignia and other crew members through their uniforms. I'm hoping too that we can get Brian's question answered.

Originally, this picture was thought to have been taken after Caronia's maiden arrival in New York. Further research and initial feedback from Pete Jelley confirms that this was not the case. From names of people identified, the crew depicted were those who arrived in New York on 15 December 1949.

Pete Jelley, a First Class Waiter on this voyage tells me that the photograph was taken either prior to the day of departure of the Christmas Cruise, or early in 1950 just prior to the Great African Cruise. In view of the picture being annotated with 1949, the probable date is 20 December 1949.

The basis of creating this page came from a question asked by Brian Hawley, who sent in the scan, and asked… “Did I notice the person arrowed, and I wonder who he was?
