Maiden Voyage January 1949
Crew List Transcript
Introduction
This page gives two sets of information. Firstly it lists all of the jobs carried out by the crew of the “Green Goddess”. Secondly, it lists what in effect were the first occupants of these posts.
Although this list is shown as a manifest, it is not intended that it give full details of each crew member, like Age, Nationality, Service at Sea etc. Also, it should be noted that other than the Ship's Articles Number, there is no set order to the list. For example, all the Carpenter's Mates are not listed together.

Whilst every effort has been made to check this transcript, the process has also highlighted a few errors in the original documents which have been corrected here. If any of the ratings are incorrectly described, do please advise me of these.
Notes
- Total crew complement, including the Master, for the Maiden Voyage was 593 of which there were approx. 379 in the Catering Department. Although part of the Catering Department, the kitchen staff were separately identified in this list, in later ones they weren't
- curiously, of the First Class Waiters, no-one is listed as being stewards for the Captain, Staff Captain, Chief Engineer or Doctor. However, there was a Chief Steward's steward. In later lists, all these jobs were specified
- It appears that the laundry was not in use, as no laundry staff are listed
- With this being Caronia's maiden voyage, a number of extra staff were taken on, both for supervisory and contingency purposes, these are listed as “Supervisor” and “Supplementary”, respectively
- The American Consulate was notified that there was insufficient time for the six supplementary men to obtain passports and visas for this journey
- for the return journey, 2 more men were Signed-on at New York
