Another On-Board Hobby

Being up to date with all the latest music was another popular hobby on board. With the ship's movement and vibration, ordinary record decks could only be used in port or in very calm weather. Reel-to-reel tape recorders were the way to overcome such problems.

With the ship's power being entirely DC , you needed a power inverter to run your AC equipment. Of course, back at home it was becoming increasingly popular to record tracks from the vital Top 30 music programme on Sunday afternoon radio.

In the photo below it looks like there's a transfer of such a recording from one deck to the other.
