Caronia's Cabin Class Public Rooms
Cabin Class Lounge

Sited aft of Caronia's Theatre, and the most aft of the public rooms on the Promenade Deck was the Cabin Class Lounge. This was the only Cabin Class public room on this deck. Unlike the 1st Class lounge, this room was divided into three carpeted sections with two linoleum aisles leading forward from the aft end of the Promenade Deck through to the Theatre.

The picture above is quite deceptive as it doesn't actually show the full width of the room. The view is taken looking aft from the forward starboard side corner looking toward the starboard side exit doors, with the central portion looking like it forms part of the port side.

The port side exit doors are partly hidden by the pillar, which itself is partly disguised by an out of position armchair. Note how the artistry of the linoleum layers is carried even into this room - would you have guessed, or thought that it was carpeted throughout?

Cabin Class Smoking Room

Sited at the very aft end of Main Deck, the Cabin Class Smoking Room was inboard of the Cabin Class Cocktail Bar and separated from it by two sets of double doors, much like the Cabin Lounge above.

When Caronia was cruising, the whole area would be known as the Raleigh Room and it was a favourite haunt for the merrier souls on board. Whilst the 1st Class Cocktail Bar and Observation Lounge were quieter and perhaps a little more dignified, this aft area could be likened to a good and lively British pub. With some merry tunes being played on the piano, usually with a few singers gathered round, the convivial atmosphere would be added to by plenty of laughter in the bar area.

Again, the picture above is quite deceptive. The view is looking forward from the starboard side aisle across the central section toward the forward port side corner. Unlike the piano in both the lounges, the one in this room is in the regular black enamel finish.

Dining Areas

Caronia's two main dining areas are sited on the Restaurant Deck, where most of the ship's catering arrangements are grouped. In view of her Royal and Scottish associations they are appropriately named, the Balmoral and Sandringham Restaurants (pictured below).

When the ship is on the North Atlantic service the two restaurants are for First and Cabin passengers respectively. They differ little in size and decoration for the Caronia is a “one-class” ship when cruising.

The picture above was the one generally used as a smaller picture in the cruising brochures, with the Balmoral Restaurant usually featuring in a larger size picture. However, in the 2-class brochures, and because there were only two other Cabin Class public rooms, the picture seen left was often used.

Sadly, in neither picture are the fabulous glass art panels seen to any effect. They are just visible as the decorations going up from the supporting stanchions into the central raised section. Note the decorative linoleum flooring.
