Sugar, and spice, and chocolate, and luscious nuts all spring from the earth in exotic lands that those who cruise around the World next winter on the luxurious Caronia will actually see for themselves.
The Caronia Great World Cruise of 1958 follows courses originally blazed by energetic explorers looking for sugar and spice to pep up the meals of kings and princes in Renaissance Europe.
Sugar cane you will see sprouting in lush fields in Brazil, or on the plains surrounding Durban, and also in Ceylon and Hawaii. Chocolate in the form of purplish cacao pods grows lavishly in Trinidad, in Brazil and Ceylon.
Cloves come from tiny buds of spreading trees that cluster profusely in Zanzibar. Delectable cinnamon you will see as a native bark on rather plain trees in Ceylon. That garden island likewise provides nutmegs, the seeds of an apple-like fruit hanging from another type of tree. And vanilla comes from orchid plants tenderly cultivated on the Seychelles Islands.
Cashew nuts come from Brazil and India. And pepper, the spice that launched Columbus’ and a thousand later ships, is a seed of a plain-looking, towering vine that borders the road you will be driving along when you reach the island of Bali.
Ginger, bananas, pawpaws, cocos de mer, coconuts - see them all where they grow almost wild for you, around the world route of the Caronia!
