The sheer beauty and colour of Naples has lured travellers for many years.

Cicero and Nero commuted from Rome to spend their holidays in villas set on the shores of the bay. Lucullus gave his famous dinners here. The world's finest tenor, Caruso, was born and studied voice in this city.

Today, Naples is a bustling port city whose front door is the Bay of Naples and whose back door is the road to Rome.

On the half-day trip around the city, you ride along the shore front boulevard, Via Parthenope, and stop at the National Museum, to see a remarkable collection of household furnishings from Pompeii — everything from milady's theatre tickets to her mirrors, combs, musical instruments and cake pans.

In the museum are some very fine statues and frescoes dating from early Roman times. Your Naples tour includes, also, a visit to the Cathedral of San Gennaro.

From the center of the city, the drive takes a shore route out to Possuoli for a look at the impressive Vespasian Amphitheatre built in the days when Rome and all that lay around Rome was a world power.

Return to the ship about noon.

No visitor to Pompeii can help but sense the suddenness of the tragedy that befell the city. The blanket of fire left truly remarkable remains and there's a special hush in the air that adds to this feeling that life, cut off so quickly, still lingers in the forums and marketplaces of this hilltop town.

Your full-day trip takes you first to Pompeii for a close look at the remains of this once-thriving commercial city. In the distance, Mount Vesuvius, dormant for years now, sits as a menacing reminder of the awful tragedy.

You walk through the houses of the rich, down their roads and see, in the museum, perfectly-preserved moulds of the food that was to be eaten when the volcano erupted.

From Pompeii, the drive continues to Amalfi, a great port city of the Middle Ages. Today, it enjoys its reputation as one of the most delightful coastal towns in all of Italy.

Luncheon is served at one of the hotels overlooking the Gulf of Salerno.

The afternoon trip follows the shore line down to Sorrento, one of the most exciting drives in all the world. The road, hugging the cliffs, winds along the sea. After a short tour around the town of Sorrento, you drive back to Naples in late afternoon, arriving in time for dinner aboard ship.
