The city of Delphi, centre of worship of Apollo, clings to a slope, 2,000 feet above sea level beneath Mount Parnassus.
It was the site of the ancient Pythian Games, but is better known as the seat of the Delphic Oracle, whose prophecies were famous. It is an impressive sight and the highpoint of this day's trip. which also includes a visit to Eleusis and a drive through the mountainous region of Greece.
You leave Pireaus in the morning and drive alone the Sacred Way to the sea, through the Thriassion Plain to Eleusis. The trip continues into the mountains past Mount Kithaeron to Thebes and Levadia, over the slopes of Mount Parnassus and into Delphi for luncheon and sightseeing.
You will see the city's ruin - the theatre of Dionysus, the Pythian Games Stadium, which seated 6,000 spectators, and the city states treasuries, most impressive of which is the Treasury of Athens.
You spend the night at one of the quaint hotels in Delphi and the following day, leave after luncheon for a return trip to Athens, arriving in the late afternoon.
