The “grandeur that was Greece” is best typified by the ruins of Athens. It was there the Greeks built their most beautiful temples, forums and theatres. This full-day excursion features the famous ruins of this historical city.
The morning's itinerary includes…
- the Arch of Hadrian,
- the Temple of Jupiter
- the Olympic Games Stadium,
- the National Museum with its extensive collection of Greek vases,
- the Cathedral and the Chapel of Saint Eleftherios
Before luncheon at one of the city's most fashionable hotels, the party drives through the new part of Athens — a bright and modern district surrounding the treasured ruins.
In the afternoon, the highlight of your tour is a visit to the Acropolis, on the rocky hill overlooking the city, the site of Athens’ most impressive ruins. At the foot of the Acropolis is the Theater of Dionysus where the plays of Aeschylus, Sophocles, Euripides and other local playwrights were performed.
Atop the Acropolis is the Parthenon, finest example we have of Greek architecture and design. Here, too, is the lovely Erectheum whose roof is supported by the statues of six Greek maidens.
After a complete tour of the Acropolis, the party visits the Temple of Theseus, the Old Market. and the Towerof the Winds, dating from the 1st century B.C. and adorned on each side with reliefs representing the principal winds.
